What Do You Really Need for a Motorhome Holiday?
A beginner’s guide to packing for your first motorhome adventure
There’s something wonderfully freeing about a motorhome holiday.
You can wake up beside the coast, spend the afternoon exploring somewhere completely new and settle down for the evening with a cup of tea — or something a little stronger — while watching the sun go down.
But if it’s your first motorhome trip, there’s one question that nearly everyone asks:
What on earth do I need to take?
The good news is, probably far less than you think.
Motorhome holidays are supposed to be about freedom, not squeezing half the contents of your house into every available cupboard. So before you start packing, here are the things that are genuinely useful.
Start with the essentials
Before the walking boots, barbecue and bottles of wine go in, make sure you have the basics covered.
Depending on the motorhome you're hiring, many essentials may already be provided, so always check what's included before you pack.
Useful basics include:
Bedding and pillows
Towels
Toiletries
Toilet roll
Washing-up liquid and a sponge
Tea towels
Bin bags
Basic cleaning supplies
Phone chargers
A torch
Reusable water bottles
Any medication you need

Don't take your entire kitchen
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make.
You really don't need to bring everything.
Most motorhomes have limited kitchen and storage space, so keep food simple, particularly for your first couple of days.
Tea, coffee and milk are obviously important — we're not suggesting complete hardship!
Then think about easy meals: pasta, breakfast ingredients, snacks and perhaps something for your first evening so you don't have to immediately find a supermarket.
Part of the fun of travelling is discovering local farm shops, bakeries, markets, pubs and cafés along the way, so leave some room for the things you find on your travels.
Pack clothes for British weather
Even in August, Britain can give you sunshine, wind and rain before lunchtime.
Layers are your friend.
Bring comfortable clothes, a warm jumper or fleece, waterproof jacket and sensible shoes. If you're planning lots of walking, proper walking boots are worth the space.
And yes, pack the shorts.
Optimism is an important part of any British holiday.
The little things you'll be glad you brought
Some things don't seem particularly important until the moment you need them.
A small backpack is brilliant for days out. A picnic blanket or outdoor chairs mean you can make the most of a beautiful view. A pack of cards or a book is perfect for quieter evenings.
It's also worth bringing a portable power bank for your phone, particularly if you're going walking or spending the day away from the motorhome.
And keep a small bag handy for wet or muddy shoes — especially if you're travelling with dogs.
Travelling with your dog
One of the best things about a motorhome holiday is being able to take your four-legged companion with you.
Pack their usual food, bowls, lead, bedding and plenty of towels. A spare lead is useful too, along with poo bags and anything they need for the journey.
If your dog is prone to getting muddy, a dedicated dog towel near the door can save your motorhome interior!
Always check the rules of the campsite you're visiting and remember that some beaches, attractions and nature reserves have seasonal restrictions for dogs.

Don't forget the journey
A motorhome holiday isn't only about where you stay.
Sometimes the best moments happen because you spotted a sign, took a different road or decided to stop somewhere you hadn't planned.
Have a rough idea of where you're heading, particularly during busy periods when campsites can fill up, but don't feel you have to organise every hour.
Leave space for detours.
That's part of the adventure.
Before you set off
If you're hiring a motorhome, spend a little time getting familiar with it before driving away.
Make sure you understand how the water, heating, electricity, toilet and fridge work. Ask how to connect to electric hook-up and where important equipment is stored.
Check the height and length of the vehicle too.
Motorhomes are very different from cars, and knowing the dimensions before you set off can prevent some rather unwelcome surprises involving low bridges, narrow roads or height barriers.
Most importantly — don't overthink it
Your first motorhome holiday doesn't have to be perfect.
You might forget something.
You might take far too much.
You may discover that the campsite chair you thought was essential never leaves the storage locker.
That's all part of learning what works for you.
Motorhome travel is about having the freedom to explore, slowing things down a little and discovering places you might otherwise drive straight past.
Pack the essentials, leave yourself some room and enjoy the journey.
Because sometimes the best holidays begin when you stop worrying about the itinerary and simply see where the road takes you.
