A peaceful little campsite in the heart of the Northumberland countryside
If you're looking for somewhere small, peaceful and surrounded by countryside, Kirk Field Banks is a lovely little find.
Set just outside the village of Ulgham, near Morpeth, this is a small campsite with a wonderfully relaxed feel. With only a limited number of pitches, it's a world away from the large, busy holiday parks and perfect for anyone who simply wants to slow down and enjoy being outdoors.
Motorhomes, campervans, caravans and tents are all welcome, and dogs can come along too.
Peace, Space & Countryside
Kirk Field Banks is surrounded by the Northumberland countryside, with plenty of space to get outside and explore.
It's particularly lovely if you're travelling with a dog. There are walks nearby where you can head off for a few hours, explore the lakes and surrounding countryside and discover a rather unexpected reminder of the area's mining history along the way.
Back at the campsite, you'll find the essentials you need for a comfortable stay, including electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, toilets and hot showers.
It's simple, peaceful camping – and that's a big part of its charm.
Explore Northumberland
Although Kirk Field Banks feels nicely tucked away, you're very well placed for exploring.
Morpeth is only a short drive away, while the beautiful Northumberland coast is easily accessible for days at the beach or exploring the coastal villages.
Head towards Druridge Bay, Amble and Warkworth, or venture a little further north to discover Alnwick, Bamburgh and some of Northumberland's spectacular castles and coastline.
Don't Miss... The Big Geordie Bucket
If you fancy a good walk while you're here, head out into the countryside around the former Stobswood opencast mining area and look out for the enormous bucket sitting rather unexpectedly in the landscape.
Locally it's often known as the Big Geordie Bucket, and once you see it, you'll understand why.
Big Geordie was the nickname given to an enormous walking dragline excavator that worked Northumberland's opencast coalfields. These extraordinary machines removed the huge quantities of earth lying above the coal seams, allowing smaller machinery to reach the coal underneath.
The bucket that remains at Stobswood is enormous – capable of holding around 100 tonnes of material in a single scoop and said to be large enough to fit approximately three cars inside.
There's also a fascinating little twist to the story.
Although everyone tends to call it the Big Geordie Bucket, the bucket you see today actually belonged to another giant dragline called the Ace of Spades. It was an even larger machine that worked at Stobswood after Big Geordie and was, during its time there, the largest walking dragline in Western Europe.
Today, with lakes, grassland, woodland and wildlife surrounding you, it's difficult to imagine these colossal machines working across the landscape.
It's a fascinating piece of Northumberland's industrial history – and certainly not something you expect to find on a countryside walk!
Why We Like It
Kirk Field Banks has a little extra significance for Woodfin Travel because it was the first campsite I ever worked at as a warden.
I got to know the site properly rather than simply visiting for a night or two, and I loved its peaceful setting, the countryside around it and its small, friendly atmosphere.
If you prefer little campsites where you can relax, walk the dog and use your pitch as a base for exploring, this is definitely one to consider.
